Simple Ideas for Fall Home Decorating

September 4, 2012 0 By Koehler Home Decor

There is more to the Fall Season than Halloween (as fun as it is) and the seasonal decor in your home should reflect that fact. With that in mind here are a few ideas for home decor crafts that are easy to make but still look warm and elegant, adding a touch of Autumn to any home.

Pumpkin Vase

Pumpkins have a big part to play in all of the Fall’s festivities. At Halloween they are carved and displayed to scare people and then on Thanksgiving they are diced up and made into pies. This is a different use for a pumpkin though that can be used all season long to add a sophisticated Fall flair to any dinner table.

What You Will Need

A large, round pumpkin
A sharp knife
Large spoon or scoop
Plastic container (small enough to fit inside the pumpkin)
Oasis floral foam

How It’s Done

Carefully cut a hole in the top of the pumpkin (however large you want the opening for the vase to be) and scoop out the contents of the pumpkin.Once that is done place the plastic container into the inside of the hollowed out pumpkin.

Cut the Oasis foam to fit inside the container and then drench with water once in place, enough so that a small pool forms in the plastic container.

Arrange flowers – preferably Fall blooms – into the Oasis and they (and the vase) should last for a week or so!

Fall Nut Wreath

It seems like everyone chooses a Fall wreath made of colored leaves to adorn their front door. While many of these are very pretty this nut wreath offers something a little different.

What You Will Need

A hot glue gun
2 lbs of walnuts still in the shell
A flat wreath form (available at most craft stores)
Almonds, pecans and hazelnuts, also in their shells
Decorative ribbon in a fall friendly shade

How It’s Done

This is an easy but fun craft. Using the larger walnuts as the main theme glue the nuts in any pattern you find most appealing, giving it all a trial run before you actually stick them down for good though. It often looks best if you create a pattern using the walnuts and glue that down first and then fill in the spaces with the smaller nuts for contrast.

Once the glue on the wreath is dry affix the ribbon, tied in a large bow, to the bottom of the wreath (or the top if you prefer) and hang it on the door for everyone to admire all season long (just watch out for squirrels!)
