Rustic home decor – which can also be referred to as country, primitive or natural – is a stunning home decor style that many people think would be impossible to achieve in their home because they do not have exposed wooden ceiling beams or hardwood floors, things that are usually the mark of rustic rooms featured in all the glossy home decor magazines.
You do not really need these things at all though to create a rustic look in your home and even the most contemporary of spaces can be transformed. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Colors – The colors on the walls used in rustic decor should be muted earth tones – whites, beiges, greens and creams. The finish should not be a glossy one so if you are repainting walls as a part of the project then look for matte paints rather than those that will leave a shiny finish.
You could even consider a product called milk paint. Milk paint was used by Colonial settlers hundreds of years ago to paint their homes and the modern version of the product imparts the same effect – while also being a very ecofriendly choice as well.
Furniture – To balance the muted colors on the walls the furniture in a rustic room should be a little heavier and darker. Rough wood should be used as much as possible. If you do not have too many wooden items on hand to use try searching thrift stores for inexpensive pieces that can be sanded and stripped.
After stripping a piece of furniture you will need to seal the wood for protection but again look for a matte varnish rather than a shiny one for a more authentic effect.
Window Treatments – Window treatments should be as simple as possible. Simple drapes in a color that accents the room or wood look blinds are great choices.
Lighting – Light up the room using lamps and hanging features. Pieces that feature wrought iron, wood and even candles are all excellent choices. If you want to add some dramatic overhead lighting for example a wrought iron candle chandelier might be a perfect choice. If you are concerned about the safety of using candles in your home you can always opt for the modern flameless versions instead. They ‘burn’ just as brightly and are very hard to tell from the real thing!
Accessories – The accessories and decor accents used in a rustic room decor set up can really tie everything together and complete the rustic look perfectly. Landscape prints, animal figurines and cabin decor accessories can all be great and very effective choices.
