Ancient Wisdom That Modern Retail Business Bloggers Will Love
Great content via a business blog is one way that retail businesses can attract both human and search bot traffic to their site. It is also an excellent way to build your brand and establish yourself as an expert in your field.
What is not easy is creating that content, so most who try, us included, are constantly looking for inspiration, ideas and ways to improve.
Confucius was a very wise figure, and great at creating memorable quotes thousands of years in advance of social media. In fact most of us have shared lots of his wisdom on our own social feeds and even in our blogs.
Speaking of blogs, without knowing it Confucius offered some great wisdom for retail business bloggers. Or at least seemed to. Here’s a look at 15 of his best sound bites that any blogger, especially those creating content to promote and enhance a retail website should keep in mind.
1. Ability will never catch up with the demand for it.
Readers crave able bloggers. There are currently many, many niche vacuums in the blogosphere that can and should be filled by able bloggers. In other words, there is a surplus of reader attention (demand) for truly excellent blogs with outstanding content (ability).
2. And remember, no matter where you go, there you are.
Nothing on the Internet these days is secret. If you leave derogatory remarks about a blogger, even if it’s in a comment on an obscure blog, you can bet that the blogger will somehow find out about it! Wherever you go online, you represent your blog. Be the person that is a good representative/spokesperson for your blog.
3. Be not ashamed of mistakes and thus make them crimes.
Everyone who blogs has made mistakes in one form or another, and these mistakes are nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, blog posts where people are open about their mistakes tend to be among the most popular and useful.
4. Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.
If someone leaves negative comments about you or your blog, you don’t have to be negative back. Be the bigger person and try (it’s hard but try) to shrug it off, learn what you can and not continue the negative cycle.
5. By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.
These are three ways to learn about blogging. By reflecting on what you already know about writing and interacting with people, you can have a solid blogging foundation. You can also imitate – but not copy – what you see successful bloggers doing. This helps significantly shorten your learning curve. If successful bloggers are doing something, it’s obviously working for them, and it can work for you, too.
And finally, you learn about blogging by just doing it. Yes, you will mess up from time to time, but the knowledge you gain will be that much more valuable to you and anyone else you care to share your experiences with.
6. Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.
Or, repurposing this for bloggers; choose a niche you love and blogging about it will be less of a chore and more of a favorite hobby. As a retail business owner you may actually find following this piece of advice rather easy.
7. Death and life have their determined appointments; riches and honors depend upon heaven.
Life and death are certain, but any success you want to have with your blog is uncertain. It’s hard to determine when it will come or even if it will come at all. Just work hard and you will be rewarded.
8. Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire.
If you absolutely despise pop-ups with every fiber of your being, don’t have them on your blog. If you hate having to sign in to comment on someone’s blog, don’t make that a requirement for your blog. Pretty simple, right?
9. Faced with what is right, to leave it undone shows a lack of courage.
Replying to all comments (within reason; you don’t need to reply to spam comments those should be deleted immediately ) and emails is the right thing to do. Don’t ignore people. It shows that you don’t value them, and it could very well lose you a reader or potential future customer.
10. Forget injuries, never forget kindnesses.
Always try to remember the people who have mentioned your blog and taken the time to comment on, retweet, or otherwise share your content. Do the same for them. Bonus: it could lead to a valuable link.
11. He who learns but does not think, is lost! He who thinks but does not learn is in great danger.
You can read a lot of blog posts, books, and ebooks and emerge having learned absolutely nothing. Make sure that no matter what you’re reading, you apply it to your blogging situation. Learn from every mistake you make and every tricky situation you encounter.
12. I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.
These are the three levels of learning effectiveness. The first involves reading a post where someone talks about doing something. For example, the blog post is “How to improve your blog.” You read it and don’t really think about it again.
The second involves actually seeing those improvements on the blog and having them stick in your mind. And the third is implementing those improvements on your own blog.
13. Men’s natures are alike, it is their habits that carry them far apart.
Yes, your blog will probably share niche space with many other blogs, but it’s your habits that will distinguish you from others. Do you consistently write great content? Are you consistently marketing your blog? Are you consistently interacting with your readership? Do these things and you – and your blog – will stand out from the crowd.
14. Respect yourself and others will respect you.
Show your blog some respect and others will respect it. Don’t plaster your blog with tons of ads. And find or invest in a professional-looking theme! They say “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” and you could also say, “Don’t judge a blog by its theme,” but in reality people do both.

When you come right down to it, having a successful blog is simple: 1) write unique, useful content that solves a problem, 2) take the time to find and tip you can to streamline and improve your process 3) work hard promoting your content.
